Summer gas mains upgrade for Monks Road, Lincoln

in your area

Major gas mains upgrade in Monks Road over the summer
  • Work will keep gas flowing to homes and businesses until the end of the century
  • Monks Road will be closed to through traffic during August; access maintained for residents and businesses
  • July will see the start of an essential gas mains upgrade in Lincoln’s Monks Road that will keep gas flowing to local homes and businesses until the end of the century.

In an seven-week project, Cadent – formerly National Grid Gas Distribution – will be renewing more than half a kilometre of gas pipes in Monks Road and Toronto Street.
Work will start in Toronto Street on 7 July, moving into Monks Road. The existing steel gas mains will be replaced with tough, durable plastic pipes that will last at least 80 years.

To keep engineers and road-users safe and to reduce traffic disruption the following traffic management measures will be in place:
    • Temporary traffic lights in Monks Road, near to Devon Street, and at the junction of Monks Road and Monks Way from week commencing 17 July for up to four weeks
    • From 7 August until 21 August, Monks Road will be closed to through traffic from the junction with Broadgate to Outer Circle Road. Vehicle access will be maintained for residents and businesses in Monks Road. Through traffic will be diverted via Lindum Road and Greetwell Road.
Paul Martin, Cadent Authorising Engineer, said: “This is essential work that will keep gas flowing to local homes and businesses for decades to come. It is part of an ongoing programme to modernise Lincoln’s gas network. We appreciate this is a busy route and the road closure has been timed for the school summer holidays to reduce the impact on the road network.

“We’ll do all we can to finish the project as soon as possible and to minimise disruption to the local residents and drivers. We’d like to thank people for their understanding and patience.”

In a further move to keep disruption down for local people, Cadent and Lincolnshire County Council have co-ordinated the gas mains renewal with the Council’s resurfacing work in Monks Road. This work will take place in Monks Road, between Allenby Close and Crofton Road, from 7 to 9 August. It will avoid having to close the road for these works in the future, averting any further disruption to the public.

Access arrangements for Monks Road residents and businesses during the closure are detailed below:
    • For residents and businesses in Monks Road, west of Jellicoe Avenue, and in Monks Way, access will be maintained from Broadgate. Access to Monks Way will be maintained via temporary traffic lights.
    • For residents and businesses in Monks Road, east of Jellicoe Avenue, including the Crofton Road Industrial Estate and Allenby Close, access will be maintained from the Outer Circle end of Monks Road.
During the County Council’s resurfacing work, from 7 to 9 August, access will be maintained up to Crofton Road. Access to Monks Road and Allenby Close will be locally managed through the estate and then via Sherbrook and Bathurst Street. During these dates there will be no access to the Tower and Hillside Estates via Tower Drive. Instead traffic should get access from Greetwell Road and Roman Pavement.
    • For residents and businesses of the Hillside and Tower Estates, access will be maintained from Greetwell Road and Roman Pavement or Tower Drive. During the Council resurfacing work, from 7 to 9 August, there will be no access via Tower Drive. Instead, traffic should use Greetwell Road and Roman Pavement.
