Essential gas mains renewal in the High Street completed nearly two weeks ahead of schedule
  • Project programme designed with local council to be delivered as smoothly as possible
  • Work will keep gas flowing to homes and businesses until the end of the century
  • Cadent engineers have completed work to replace 300 metres of ageing gas pipes in Bedford’s High Street nearly two weeks earlier than planned.

The High Street was back to normal and all temporary traffic management was lifted on Sunday 6 August. That’s 12 days ahead of schedule.

The essential work began on Monday 17 July and was due to be completed on Friday 18 August. The project was suspended on Friday 21 July to ensure that it did not impact the Bedford Love event on Sunday 23 July.

The project will help ensure that local people continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating in future years.

Dilbir Chana, Cadent Authorising Engineer, said: “We really appreciated people’s understanding and co-operation while we carried out this vital work.

“With meticulous planning, extended working hours, collaborative working and by pulling out the stops to get the work done as quickly as possible we were able to finish ahead of time. The project was planned in close discussion with Bedford Borough Council to make sure that we delivered it with as little disruption as possible.”

He added: “This has been a huge team effort by our engineers and contractors. I’m grateful to them for their efforts and for going that extra mile to deliver this project successfully and well ahead of schedule.”

During the work signs were put up to remind people that businesses were open as usual. Local residents and businesses and were kept fully informed about the project.

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
