Meet Cadent's very own recruiting sergeant

working for us

Darren Burgess proudly served in the British Army for 12 years and now has a key role in keeping the North West’s underground gas network operating safely, day and night, 365 days a year.

The 38-year-old, from Manchester, is something of a ‘recruiting sergeant’ for gas network Cadent, having helped three of his former combat comrades transition from military life to a career at a company which looks after more than 21,000 miles of gas pipes in North West England.

Darren BurgessDarren yesterday attended the official launch of the Cadent Military Group, a new internal network of colleagues who formerly served in the armed forces, and/or serve now as reservists.

Cadent is a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant and keen to support service leavers to enter the business. Martin Rimmer, Chief People Officer, said this helps Cadent “grow a diverse and inclusive organisation, allowing us to be truly representative of the communities we serve.”

Darren, who served in The 22nd Cheshire Regiment until 2009 and joined Cadent six years later after spells working as a bodyguard and in private security, is very keen to support this. He’s already helped three of his pals, including his current ‘second man’ David McMahon, join Cadent.

“I’m a team leader now here at Cadent – a repair engineer. We work day and night to make sure the pipes work safely. It’s a job that suits someone like me, ex-military – lots of logistics involved, keeping on top of kit and equipment, following your training, keeping calm under pressure.

“A lot of the core values are the same too – plus, you’ll find we’re always on time, and we never sleep in! It all comes down to the right attitude; if you’ve got that, there’s real scope for progression and building a new life for yourself after the Army.”

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
