Severe gas escape fixed outside Manchester United football stadium

Severe damage to a gas main right outside the entrance to one of Old Trafford’s main car parks has been fixed, safely and quickly, just days before a Premier League match.

Cadent was informed on Monday that gas was escaping from a hole on a 10-inch diameter cast iron main in John Gilbert Way, after it was damaged by a third party working in the road.

The location is a few hundred metres from Manchester United FC’s stadium and in front of the entry gates to its car park N3.

Teams arrived on site quickly and a temporary repair to stop the leak was completed within hours.

Fast footwork then ensured expert contractors PLCS were booked in to carry out a permanent fix using a technique widely used in such situations called ‘encapsulation’.

This work was undertaken on Wednesday and, after the necessary 24 hours’ grace to allow the bonding materials to cure, the teams will be off-site – removing any concerns about access for fans attending United’s top-flight game against Leicester City on Saturday.

Dan Young, repair team leader for Cadent, said: “There was a lot of gas coming from this damaged main and to fix it and be off site within a few days is really good going. Excellent team work from start to finish, and gets us off site before United’s game on Saturday.”
