Super Collie Goes Artistic With Praise We Think Tremendous

Chester, the bearded collie, sends letter of thanks to team who took his nervy nature into consideration during major work to upgrade gas mains outside his Cheshire home

A couple from Cheshire have heaped praise on a team of gas workers for being considerate to the nervy nature of their dog while they carried out work outside their home.

Pauline and Ron Adams, from Northwich, sent in a letter – ‘written’ by their bearded collie Chester – to express thanks to the team working for gas network Cadent.

Chester, it transpires, is not a fan of loud noises – which is a challenge for the engineers putting in new underground gas mains, using big machinery to dig deep into the road.

But whenever Chester’s owners left home with him for a walk, they’d stop work temporarily and only resume once he’d gone by. A simple gesture leading to this letter into Cadent HQ:

Sean Somerville, the site supervisor mentioned in the letter, said: “This is big but necessary work we’re doing to upgrade some very old gas mains and we appreciate all the patience and support we’re being shown as we get it done.

“I’ve passed this feedback onto the team – Shane Mulhern, Danny Gallagher, Raymond Higgins and Myles Livesey. Their small gesture has clearly had a big impact. We try very hard to keep our customers happy, whether human or canine!”

This work in Northwich is part of a major programme of mains replacement being undertaken by Cadent as it replaces ageing metallic mains. Some date back to the 19th century and now need replacing to ensure safe and reliable supplies of ever-greener gases, well into the future.

Cadent is the UK’s biggest gas network, operating four of the eight gas distribution networks in the UK, including the network for North West England. Its job is to distribute gas to the 2.7 million properties connected to the NW gas network, including the management, maintenance and upgrades of around 21,000 miles of underground pipes under this region alone. Placed end-to-end, that amount of pipes would go from Cheshire to Sydney in Australia, and back again.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
