Essential gas mains replacement work underway in Sutton Road, Southend-On-Sea
■    Work scheduled for completion in December 2017
  • Wentworth Road closed and two way traffic lights in Sutton Road to ensure work is delivered safely and efficiently
With winter fast approaching engineers are hard at work replacing ageing gas mains in Southend-On-Sea.
Work recently got underway on the essential project which involves replacing the old gas mains with tough new pipes which should last for many decades and help ensure local people keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas pipes for cooking and heating.
To enable the work to be carried out safely and efficiently Wentworth Road has been temporarily closed and temporary two way traffic lights are in place in Sutton Road. These are being manually operated in peak hours to minimise congestion.
Cadent Streetworks Specialist Gary Hawkins said:  “We’ve carefully designed the project including the traffic management to ensure it has as little impact as possible on the area.”
He added: “Once this project is complete the area will have robust new gas mains which will last for many decades and ensure local people continue to enjoy access to safe and reliable energy supplies for cooking and heating.
“Installing new gas pipes will also reduce the amount of unplanned repairs and maintenance needed on our network and the knock-on disruption that can cause for residents and road users.”
Work will also involve the replacement of gas service pipes to some properties in the area. Cadent will liaise with these properties to arrange for the work to be done. The work will require a temporary disconnection of the gas supply to each property involved to enable the new pipe to be installed.
People are reminded that they should always ask to see official identification before letting engineers into their property. All Cadent engineers carry official identity cards which should be inspected before access is granted.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
