- Replacement of ageing gas mains in City of London’s Tudor Street begins

Work has started on an essential project which will help keep people in the City of London connected to safe and reliable gas supplies into the 22
nd century.
This week engineers started work to replace ageing gas mains, which are nearing the end of their operational life, with tough new pipes, which will help ensure locals stay connected to safe and reliable gas supplies until the Year 2100.
Currently its anticipated that work will continue into September 2020 with traffic management and signed diversions in place.
The project is being delivered in two phases as follows:
Phase One (Currently underway and anticipated to finish 26 June 2020)
Work will be carried out between the junctions with Bouverie Street/Temple Street and Dorset Rise, with a road closure in place.
Phase Two (27 June 2020 to 11 September 2020)
A road closure will be in place between the junctions with John Carpenter Street and New Bridge Street, to enable engineers to carry out work there.
To maintain traffic flows signed two-way diversions will be in place via Whitefriars Street and New Bridge Street. The Cycle Route along Tudor Street will also be kept open where it is safe and practical to do so, however some parking bays will ned to temporarily suspended.
The project does not involve replacing gas service pipes so there will be no need for engineers to have access to properties.
Cadent Authorising Engineer Mick Morris said: “This is essential work and is part of a nationwide programme to replace gas mains that have now reached the end of their operational lives.
“Installing the new pipes will help keep gas flowing safely for cooking and heating, and also reduce the disruption caused by leaks from old gas mains.”
The UK Government has classed work undertaken by energy networks like Cadent as essential during the Coronavirus outbreak, as they are ensuring a safe and reliable gas supply. Engineers work to the latest government guidance and are taking extra safety precautions as required
Mr Morris added: “Our teams have been fully briefed on the procedures outlined by the Government around social distancing.
“The safety of the public and our workforce remains of paramount importance to us and we also ask those passing by our work sites observe Government social distancing guidelines as well.”
