  • Newly minted energy company Cadent powering ahead with game-changing innovation
  • Virtual reality and 3D technology among the new innovations Cadent is showcasing at Utility Week Live
  • Cadent is driven by courageous curiosity to lead the way in innovations that will benefit customers and keep energy flowing into the future.

It was only launched this month but newly minted energy company Cadent is already exploring new energy frontiers and showcasing its innovations at Utility Week Live 2017.

Cadent may be proud of its 200 year heritage in the gas industry but it is determined to have a bold start up mentality illustrated by some sci-fi sounding innovations it is displaying at its Utility Week Live stand on May 23 and 24 at the NEC in Birmingham.

A short film produced by Cadent about the Future of Energy will be shown and innovative energy solutions on display will include:

Mobile Virtual Reality Modelling: Capturing engineering knowledge and knowhow
Mobile Virtual Reality Modelling uses augmented reality to digitally capture the irreplaceable knowledge of experienced engineers dealing with complex procedures. These can then be passed onto future generations of engineers, rather than being lost when engineers retire.
This technology could have wide applicability outside energy, particularly where operatives are working or training in hazardous environments and/or where critical knowledge loss is a business risk.

The 3D Volume Scanner: Creating three dimensional maps of what lies beneath
3D Technology need not just be for Hollywood blockbusters, as shown by the 3D Scanner Cadent has jointly developed with Catalyst Information Services.
The scanner could help engineers working on utility reinstatement works do their job as quickly and accurately as possible thus helping to improve customer experience.
The technology enables engineers to calculate the volume and dimensions of excavations and the type of material used in each layer.

Going flat out for improvement: Improving the way we work in multi-occupancy buildings (MOBs) with NuFlow lining technology and the EZ Valve™
Repairing gas escapes in flats presents various challenges.
However NuFlow epoxy lining technology enables engineers to refurbish gas riser pipework in situ, rather than carrying out a full replacement of the pipe. Though it’s not appropriate for every kind of job associated with flats it significantly reduces customer time off gas where it can be used.
The EZ Valve™ technology allows engineers to construct a Pipeline Isolation Valve (PIV) on the live gas network without the need to interrupt gas supply to all customers in a multiple occupancy building (MOB).
Its main benefits include ensuring as many properties as possible remain on gas in a MOB and estimated cost reductions of 50 per cent on jobs the technology is used on.

Cadent is a brand new company formed from the sale of National Grid Gas Distribution and is the licensed owner and operator of four of the eight gas distribution networks in Great Britain: East of England, North London, North West and West Midlands; making it the largest gas distribution network owner and operator in the UK.

Huw Sullivan Cadent Innovation Delivery Manager said: “At Cadent our innovation is driven by curiosity we want to find ways to do things differently to benefit our customers now and also to be at the forefront of solutions to keep energy flowing long into the future.

“It’s very exciting to be showcasing these new innovations which look set to be real game-changers in the energy industry and beyond.”

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.

Cadent manages the national gas emergency service free phone line on behalf of the gas industry - 0800 111 999*

Cadent Gas Ltd is owned by a consortium of global investors.
