Cadent pledges support to victims of domestic abuse

  • Cadent signs up to the Employers Domestic Abuse Covenant
  • Company pledges to offer access to employment and training for victims of domestic abuse
  • In November 2020 2.3 million adults across England and Wales experienced domestic abuse
Cadent the UK’s largest gas distribution network has signed up to the Employers Domestic Abuse Covenant (EDAC). EDAC is a Government supported pledge by businesses that enables women affected by abuse to enter or re-enter the workplace.

According to the Crime Survey for England and Wales, in November 2020 2.3 million or 5% of adults across England and Wales experienced domestic abuse, this does not include children under 16. These numbers are expected to rise substantially post lockdown.

By signing up to the Covenant, Cadent are pledging to work with EDAC to offer access to training and employment for women and men who have been victims of domestic abuse.

Cadent will also be raising awareness among their colleagues who are working in the community of how to spot the signs of domestic abuse in hopes of supporting more victims to come forward.

Martin Rimmer, Chief People Officer said: “Those fleeing domestic abuse experience financial hardship due to the nature of their departure, this may also be a factor that prevents them from leaving. Cadent have signed the Employers Domestic Abuse Covenant in order to help assist people in these situations.

“We would urge other organisations to support this initiative either by signing the covenant or by pledging employment or training to those affected. This is one of the few occasions where a life or lives can be saved by providing employment”

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
