Q&A with Rian McLaughlin - Senior Design Analyst

working for us

Tell us a bit about how you got to where you are now

I started my training scheme with Cadent back in September 2017. Before this I was working in a McDonald's full time, while studying engineering at college.

What does your day-to-day role involve?

My role involves assessing the capacity of our offtakes and pressure reduction stations within the gas network. This can also involve analysis which is used to create our investment plans, which are essential to keeping the gas flowing throughout our network.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

The part I enjoy most about my role is that every day is different and new. There are always opportunities to develop and further my learning along the way.

What advice would you give to someone who’s unsure what they want to do with their career?

My advice would be that if you are bored or unsure about what you are doing currently, then maybe what you are doing is not for you and a shake-up may lead to new and exciting opportunities. Find a job you enjoy and you’ll never work a day in your life.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
