Widnes Foodbank provides 454 meals from donation by Cadent engineers

helping our community

Employees of gas network Cadent donated food and other goods to Widnes Foodbank after clubbing together vouchers they’d been given by their employer.

Now they’ve learned their combined donation – totalling £595 – has enabled the food bank to provide over 450 meals.

The ‘field force’ engineers at Cadent were given Love2Shop vouchers at Christmas. Micky Nutt, Garston-based first-call operative (FCO), reached out to his emergency and repair colleagues to see if any wanted to join forces in making a donation to a local charity with them. He was inundated.

Mike Howe, his supervisor, said: “We spoke to Widnes Foodbank and, at their request, held off until after Christmas because they knew they’d have a shortage following the festive flurry.

“Micky and I went shopping with £595 worth of vouchers to buy products the food bank told us they needed and then delivered it to the warehouse. We handed over 190kgs of food, which we now know has enabled them to make up 454 meals.”

Just before Christmas, Cadent pledged £6,000 to support a number of food banks in the communities it serves. The independent charitable foundation it funds, Cadent Foundation, has also just made a £240,000 commitment to support the Trussell Trust in its response to coronavirus.

Cadent manages over 21,000 miles of underground gas mains and hundreds of above ground installations which deliver gas safely to more than 2.7 million properties in North West England. It also provides the region’s 24/7, year-round gas emergency service.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
