Gas pipe upgrade City Road Birmingham

big projects

  • Gas mains upgrade for City Road, Birmingham, starts 6 March for a month
  • Part of Cadent’s £65 million investment in new gas pipes for the West Midlands
  • Road closures, parking restrictions and temporary traffic lights needed
Vital work to keep the gas flowing in Birmingham until the next century is due to start in City Road and Rotton Park Road on Monday (6 March).

Starting next Wednesay (6 March), local gas network Cadent will be replacing old iron pipes with tough new plastic ones that will last at least 80 years. The work will mean local residents and businesses can continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies to heat their homes and power their businesses for decades to come.

The work will be carried out in two phases. Road closures and temporary traffic lights will be needed to keep engineers, residents and motorists safe while the work is under way.

During phase one, from 6 – 18 March, work will start in City Road. The following traffic management will be in place:
  • Twyning Road will be closed at the junction with City Road
  • Temporary traffic lights at the junction of Twyning Road and City Road. These will be manually operated from 7am to 7pm.
  • No parking opposite the junction of Twyning Road and City Road
During phase two, from 18 March to 7 April, work will be taking place in the junction of Rotton Park Road and City Road. The following traffic management measures will be in place:
  • Rotton Park Road will be closed between City Road and Dudley Road to through traffic. Access will be maintained for residents.
  • Northbound diversion route via City Road A4040, Dudley Road A457, Winson Green Rd A4040, Heath Street, B4135, Cranford St, B4135, Grove Lane A457, Dudley Road A457. Southbound diversion route via Dudley Road (A457) and City Road.
  • Temporary traffic lights at the junction of Rotton Park Road and City Road
Craig Horrocks, who heads up Cadent’s gas mains replacement project in the West Midlands, said: “This work is really important to ensure that local homes and businesses continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for many decades to come. It is part of a £65 million investment to make the West Midlands gas network fit for the 21st century and beyond.

“We would urge people to please abide by the traffic management – especially the parking restrictions. We need these so we can keep everyone safe while we carry out this work. We will make every effort to complete this essential work as soon as possible and we’d like to thank people for bearing with us.”

The work is part of a £65 million investment, this year, to make the West Midlands gas network fit for the 21st century and beyond.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
