  • Programme developed by Cadent has reached thousands of schoolchildren

He’s a bear with an important message to share and this month he’s been out and about in Suffolk and Norfolk passing top safety tips to schoolchildren.

Caped crusader Safety Seymour visited a number of local primary schools recently to spread gas safety messages, which organisers hope schoolchildren will also share with their families.

Earlier this month the eponymous bear undertook an epic East Anglian tour visiting Great Yarmouth Primary, Stradbroke Primary School, Gorleston, St Mary & St Peters Catholic Primary School, Gorleston, Dell Primary School, Oulton Broad and Bluebell Primary School, Norwich.

His safety messages appear to have been received with enthusiasm by his young audiences, with positive feedback being received from the sessions and pupils enjoying taking the message back home to their families

Ed Dooley from Bluebell Primary School, Norwich, said: “The event went really well and Safety Seymour proved a big hit with the children.

“They enjoyed the activities which provided a fun and interactive way to learn some important safety messages about gas and carbon monoxide safety.”

Cadent Stakeholder Specialist Amanda O’Shea, said: “We developed the Safety Seymour concept several years ago as a free educational package for six and seven year-olds which involve a whole day of activities.

“The content relates directly to the National Curriculum and teaches the children the basics of carbon monoxide safety through fun activities such as drama and art.”

Each child received a free carbon monoxide alarm and activity pack to take home and complete with their family as homework.

Amanda added: “All the children seemed to really enjoy the events so hopefully Safety Seymour succeeded on his mission to spread the safety message to children and their families.”

Cadent has also shared the Safety Seymour content and resources with the other gas distribution networks and the programme has now been rolled out across the UK.

Safety Seymour sessions are available to any school or youth organisation however Cadent proactively plans sessions in areas with high numbers of emergency call-outs to Carbon Monoxide incidents.

Cadent has also shared the Safety Seymour content and resources with the other gas distribution networks and the programme has now been rolled out across the UK.

Now adopted across the UK, Safety Seymour activities will soon have reached 7,500 children.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
