Essential work to repair gas main under busy Sefton road

in your area

Work is set take place next week to repair a gas main under Dunningsbridge Road.

Earlier in the year, engineers from Cadent, the company which manages Merseyside’s gas network, carried out a temporary fix after this pipe was damaged during work by another utility firm.

This was always only a short-term solution and, after liaising with Sefton Council, it’s been agreed that work to carry out the permanent repair will begin after the morning rush-hour on Monday (5th July).

All work takes place close to the junction with Copy Lane, in the lanes heading towards Switch Island only.

Between 9am and 4pm each day, Monday-Sunday, to ensure a safe flow of traffic around the work area, the three lanes of Dunningsbridge Road will be reduced to one lane on the approach to Copy Lane.

Outside these times, two lanes will be open. There will also be no left turn from Dunningsbridge Road into Copy Lane, as the teams are working very close to this junction. A diversion will be signposted.

If all goes to plan, all lanes should be open again by the end of the weekend that follows (11th July).

“When we found out that another utility had damaged our pipe we moved in quickly to apply a temporary repair,” said Nick Jerman, Cadent's Customer Operations Area Manager for Merseyside.

“While it's a safe way to provide a short-term solution, it can only ever be temporary. We have to move back now to make it safe long-term, which involves more extensive work under the carriageway.

He added: “We appreciate this isn’t ideal, not least given how busy this road is.

“We’ve agreed with Sefton Council to work only between 9am and 4pm, so that two of the three lanes can be open at busiest times.”

Cadent manages the North West’s 21,000-mile underground gas network which transports gas to 2.7 million homes, hospitals, schools, offices, industrial and other sites across the region. Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
