22nd century future-proofing: Gas mains upgrade to cope with future demand in Radlett

in your area

This summer Cadent will be upgrading the local gas network in Radlett to help ensure the local community keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies into the 22nd century.

The project will take place in Common Lane, Radlett and is scheduled to begin on Monday 3rd August and be completed by Friday 4 September 2020.

Engineers will be laying 350m of new gas mains and will need to dig large open excavations to install them. To carry out the work safely a road closure will also need to be in place for the duration of the project. The new gas mains will complement the existing gas mains in the area and help ensure future gas demand continues to be met in the area.

Gas supplies to the area  will be maintained throughout the work and engineers will not require access to properties.

To ensure the work is completed as soon as possible engineers will be working extended hours where possible.

Dilbir Chana, Cadent Authorising Engineer, said: “We need to install these new gas pipes to help ensure the local area keeps on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.

“We’ve carefully designed the project to ensure its delivered as promptly as possible and we’re doing all we can to minimise inconvenience.”

The UK Government has classed work undertaken by energy networks like Cadent as essential during the Coronavirus outbreak, as they are ensuring a safe and reliable gas supply. Engineers work to the latest government guidance and are taking extra safety precautions as required

Mr Chana added: “Our teams have been fully briefed on the procedures outlined by the Government around social distancing.
“The safety of the public and our workforce remains of paramount importance to us and we also ask those passing by our work sites observe Government social distancing guidelines as well.”

If anyone has any questions about the project they can call our customer helpline on 0800 151 2404.

This work is part of Cadent’s ongoing investment across its network to replace and upgrade its gas network with durable modern pipes.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
