An ageing gas pipe in Grimsby’s Ladysmith Road is set for a summer upgrade, in July, that will see it continue to deliver safe and reliable gas supplies to local residents for decades to come.
North East Lincolnshire gas distributor Cadent will be replacing more than a kilometre of iron gas mains with tough, hard-wearing plastic pipes that will last until the next century.
Work starts on 6 July and is expected to be completed by 10 August.
To carry out the work safely, Ladysmith Road will be closed northbound from Weelsby Road to Ropery Street, with access for residents only. A diversion route will be in place via Weelsby Road, Peaks Parkway, Cleethorpe Road, Park Street, and Durban Road.
There will also be temporary traffic lights at the junction of Ropery Street, Ladysmith Road, and Durban Road.
Darren Elsom, Director of East Network, said: “Our job is to keep the gas flowing to homes, vital public services, and businesses, especially at this difficult time. This project is part of a £58 million investment we’re making this year to improve our gas network in the East Midlands.
“This pipe is nearing the end of its life and needs replacing and once the new pipe is in the ground it will ensure safe and reliable gas supplies for local people for decades to come.
“We would like to thank people for their patience while the work is carried out. Every effort will be made to complete this project as soon as possible.”

Did you know? Grimsby has had a gas supply since 1838. Gas was first used for street lighting, when Richard Holme, of the Haven Company, erected a gas works on Loft Street and lit the streets for the first time. Gas was later used – as now – for heating, cooking and hot water.
