Future-proofing goes on amid the lockdown: Cadent works through the pandemic to deliver £5m scheme to keep Londoners connected to safe and reliable gas supplies

#ourlockdownstory

Cadent engineers have been working through the pandemic to deliver a major £5m project that will help keep Londoners connected to safe and reliable gas supplies.

The scheme has involved the construction of a new PRS (Pressure Reduction Station) in Tower Hamlets which will help keep the gas flowing to thousands of homes across East London, helping to keep people safe and warm.

The scheme also involves replacing ageing gas pipes with tough new pipes which should last into the 22nd century.

Once operational the facility’s job will be to adjust gas pressure enabling it to be fed into the local gas distribution network to supply thousands of homes, businesses and community facilities.

All the above work activities have been on-going while lockdown has been in place (social distancing of course)

Cadent Authorising Engineer Carl Williams said: “We’ve been carrying out the work during the lockdown while observing government social distancing guidelines.

“The whole project is planned to be completed within eight months and we’re on track to do that.”

He added: “This project is part of Cadent’s ongoing major investment in the capital which will help ensure Londoner’s keep on enjoying world class infrastructure into the 22nd century.”

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
