Feel the heat: Cadent and Affordable Warmth Solutions (AWS) turn up the temperature in the fight on fuel poverty with Peterborough project

  • Cadent and Affordable Warmth Solutions (AWS) launch new gas connection scheme in Peterborough
  • Project will connect housing association properties to affordable gas heating system
  • Cadent and AWS working to lift households out of fuel poverty

Work has started to connect 31 housing association properties in Peterborough to affordable energy supplies.

Cadent and AWS (Affordable Warmth Solutions) have started work to lay gas mains and service pipes to 31 homes maintained by housing association, Housing & Care 21, at Earl Spencer Court in Peterborough.

A communal gas supply will also be installed and outdated electric heating systems removed and replaced with new energy efficient gas central heating, all at no extra cost to residents.

Work on the project recently got underway and is due for completion in late June 2019, meaning residents will have their new heating system ready to go well in advance of any chilly autumn and winter days.

Phil Burrows, Cadent Customer Service Manager, said: “We’re very happy to be working with AWS and Housing 21 to deliver this scheme.

“With the new connection to our local gas network and energy efficient gas heating systems residents will have an economical and efficient way to heat their homes in place well in advance of the chilly autumn and winter season.”

Jeremy Nesbitt, Managing Director of AWS, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Cadent and Housing & Care 21 to deliver this exciting scheme to residents.

“Replacing the old outdated electric heating system with an efficient and economic gas one should really make a positive difference to the lives of the residents.”

Affordable Warmth Solutions (AWS) is a Community Interest Company that assists qualifying homes by offering:

  • New gas connections to those not currently connected to the Cadent gas distribution network
  • Income maximisation, energy efficiency and tariff advice.

AWS was established in 2008 to help address the issues caused by increasing energy prices and the growth of Fuel Poverty in the UK.

Cadent set up its partnership with AWS under its previous trading name of National Grid Gas prior to Cadent being formed in 2017.

Since its inception the partnership has helped lift many thousands of households from fuel poverty.

AWS also established the Warm Homes Fund in partnership with National Grid. This scheme allows Local Authorities and Housing Associations to apply for funding to help address the challenges of fuel poverty.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
