- Last phase of essential project to replace ageing gas mains gets underway this summer
- Work will involve closure of Brooksby’s Walk for approximately eight weeks
- Public exhibition about the project will be held on Friday 5 July 2019
- New gas mains should last until dawn of the 22nd century
Cadent is inviting the public to find out more about the last stage of its project to replace ageing gas mains with tough new pipes which should last until the dawn of the 22
nd century.
This work involves the final phase of a project to replace a large old gas main running between Lea Bridge Road and Victoria Park Road in Hackney. The majority of the work has already been done and the final phase involves joining up the two sections of new pipe which have already been laid. This will involve work from the south of Homerton Grove running into Brooksby’s Walk, Homerton High Street and Barnabas Road.
Work is due to start on Monday 1 July 2019 and it will last for around 10 weeks. The first week of work will require the suspension of some parking bays and the bus stop on Brooksby’s Walk near St Barnabas Terrace. After this Brooksby’s Walk will need to be closed for approximately eight weeks. Local traffic will be diverted via Homerton Grove and Wardle Street. There will also be advance warning signs to encourage through traffic to avoid the area with a signed diversion route along Leabridge Road and Lower Clapton Road. For approximately eight weeks, from Monday 8 July, temporary traffic lights will also be required on Homerton High Street to manage traffic flows.
Local people are invited to come and find out more and meet the project team at a public exhibition, which will be held in Chats Palace, 42-44 Brooksby’s Walk, E9 6DF on Friday 5 July between 3pm and 7pm.
The new pipes will help ensure local people stay connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for heating and cooking for decades and also cut the number of disruptive unplanned repair jobs required on ageing gas mains.
Local shops and businesses will remain open as usual through the work and there will be no interruption of local gas supplies.
Cadent Authorising Engineer Mick Morris said: “To ensure our work causes minimal disruption in the area we’ve planned it in close discussion with the local authority, Transport for London, the Ambulance Service, Fire Brigade and Homerton Hospital.
“I’d encourage anyone who wants to know more about the project to come and meet us on Friday 5 July, alternatively they can contact us by email or phone.”
He added: “This project is crucial in ensuring we continue to providing safe and reliable energy to homes and businesses and it will also reduce the amount of unplanned work to repair ageing gas pipes and associated disruption.

This work is part of Cadent’s ongoing investment across its network to replace and upgrade old gas mains with safer and more durable modern pipes.
