Sharing the warmth: Cadent and Affordable Warmth Solutions (AWS) work to reduce fuel poverty in Stowmarket

helping our community

  • Cadent and Affordable Warmth Solutions (AWS) launch new gas connection scheme in Stowmarket
  • Project will connect housing association properties to efficient and affordable gas heating system
  • Cadent and AWS working to lift households out of fuel poverty

Work has started to connect housing association properties in Stowmarket to affordable energy supplies.

Cadent and AWS (Affordable Warmth Solutions) this week started work to lay gas mains and service pipes to 33 homes maintained by housing association, Housing & Care 21, at Grainger Way, Thompson Close and Turner Lane in Haughley, Stowmarket.

Once the new gas main and service pipes have been installed a new communal gas supply system will also be laid. Housing & Care 21 will then remove existing outdated electrical heating systems and replace them with a new energy efficient gas central heating system. The work is being carried out at no extra cost to residents.

The project is due for completion in late July 2019, meaning residents will have their new heating system in place well in advance of any chilly autumn and winter days.

Cadent and AWS recently worked with Housing & Care 21 to deliver a similar scheme in Peterborough.

Phil Burrows, Cadent Customer Service Manager, said: “It’s great that Cadent and AWS are working with Housing & Care 21 again to deliver another scheme.

“The scheme will provide residents with a modern, economical and efficient heating system well in advance of the chilly autumn and winter season.”

Jeremy Nesbitt, Managing Director of AWS, said: “This scheme will see old outdated electrical heating systems replaced with modern, efficient and economic gas central heating systems.

“I’m delighted that AWS and Cadent have been able to work with Housing & Care 21 again to deliver a scheme which should help improve the lives of residents.”

Affordable Warmth Solutions (AWS) is a Community Interest Company that assists qualifying homes by offering:

  • New gas connections to those not currently connected to the Cadent gas distribution network
  • Income maximisation, energy efficiency and tariff advice.

AWS was established in 2008 to help address the issues caused by increasing energy prices and the growth of Fuel Poverty in the UK.

Cadent set up its partnership with AWS under its previous trading name of National Grid Gas prior to Cadent being formed in 2017.

Since its inception the partnership has helped lift many thousands of households from fuel poverty.

AWS also established the Warm Homes Fund in partnership with National Grid. This scheme allows Local Authorities and Housing Associations to apply for funding to help address the challenges of fuel poverty.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
