- Historic village of Little Wymondley in line for major gas mains renewal project
- Work due to start in late July and continue into early September 2019
- Work will involve traffic management including road closures
- New pipes will help keep Little Wymondley connected to safe and reliable gas supplies until the dawn of the 22nd century
This summer Cadent will start a major project to replace ageing gas mains in the historic Hertfordshire village of Little Wymondley.
The essential work will see ageing gas mains which are nearing the end of their operational life replaced with tough new pipes which will help ensure locals stay connected to safe and reliable gas supplies until the dawn of the 22
nd century.
It’s planned to deliver the work in two phases as follows:
Phase One 29th July to 4th August 2019
Stevenage Road will be closed at the junction of Chantry Lane.
Phase Two August 5 to September 9 2019
Road closure will remain in place in Stevenage Road at the junction with Chantry Lane and a further closure will be implemented on Stevenage Road at the junction with Titmore Court.
Access will be maintained to Lower Titmore Green at all times. Pedestrians, horses and pedal cycles will be able to pass through the closure with signed diversions in place for other road users.
Cadent is doing all it can to deliver the work with as little disruption as possible.
Work is being planned in close discussion with the local authority and the bulk of the project is being delivered during the school summer holiday period when roads are generally quieter. To minimise disruption the new pipes will also be inserted into the old gas mains where possible, which reduces the need for digging large excavations in the road and footways, meaning less disruption for the public.
Advanced warning signs regarding the work will be up a month before work starts and local shops and businesses will remain open as usual throughout the project.
Local gas supplies will also be maintained throughout the work.
The project represents another chapter in the village’s fascinating history. The village was home to a ‘dissenting academy’ where non-conformist church ministers were trained from 1799 to the early 1830s. Today its attractions include a Grade II listed church parts of which date back to the 12th century as well as two 17th century pubs.
Cadent Authorising Engineer Dilbir Chana said: “This essential project represents a new chapter in the history of Little Wymondley.
“The existing gas mains have served the village well for many years but we now need to replace them to help ensure local residents keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating in future years.”
He added: “We’re doing all we can to deliver this work with as little disruption to the public as possible including using minimal techniques where possible and delivering the bulk of the project during the school summer holidays when roads are generally quieter.
“The new gas mains will reduce the risk of future disruption caused by leaks from old pipes and will help ensure local people have safe and reliable gas supplies until the dawn of the 22
nd century.”
Cadent will do all it can to deliver the work with as little disruption as possible.

This work is part of Cadent’s ongoing investment across its network to replace and upgrade old gas mains with safer and more durable modern pipes.
