  • Essential work will help keep local residents connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating
Work began this week on an essential project to replace ageing gas mains with tough new pipes.

The project is currently scheduled to last for four weeks and will see the ageing mains replaced with tough new pipes.

Temporary traffic lights will be used for the duration of the project to enable the work to be carried out safely and efficiently. The work has been specially scheduled ahead of the local authority’s planned road resurfacing work and designed so it does not have any adverse impact on the town’s annual carnival on Saturday 24 June.

Local shops and businesses will remain open as normal during the work.

Cadent Authorising Engineer Dilbir Chana, said: “This essential project will future-proof the local gas mains network and help ensure the local community keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating in the future.”

He added: “The work has been planned in close discussion with the local authority and we’ve scheduled it ahead of their planned resurfacing work in the area to minimise inconvenience.

“We’ll continue to do all we can to deliver the project with as little disruption to people as possible.”

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
