Bolton Street in Ramsbottom is next in the pipeline for gas main upgrade

in your area

  • 450 metres of ageing metallic gas mains will be replaced in Bolton Street
  • Essential work to ensure safe and reliable gas supply, for heating and cooking
  • Work scheduled for summer holidays, to minimise unavoidable disruption

Essential work to ensure gas safely reaches thousands of homes in Ramsbottom, for cooking and heating, is due to start on Monday (23 July).

Local gas network Cadent needs to upgrade the ageing metallic mains pipe that sits under Bolton Street by replacing it with a modern, durable plastic pipe.

The eight-week project will take place in school summer holidays to minimise inevitable disruption caused by teams needing to work in the road.

Steve Murray, who heads Cadent’s mains replacement programme in the North West, said: “Customers who live in Ramsbottom will know we’ve had to fix a number of small leaks on this metallic pipe in recent years. These are clear signs this pipe is simply reaching the end of its life, so we need to get in there and replace it.

“This will ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas until at least the end of the century, to cook meals and keep people warm in winter months.”

Around 450 metres of pipe will be replaced, starting at Bolton Street’s junction with Dundee Lane, up to Lever Street. To ensure the safety of workers and motorists navigating this busy work area, the planning team has worked with Bury Council’s highways team to agree the following temporary traffic arrangements:

  • Four-way traffic lights will control traffic using the junction of Dundee Lane, Bolton Street and Nuttall Lane
  • Traffic moving along Bolton Street will be controlled by two-way traffic lights
  • Access from and to Kay Brow will not be possible for approximately two weeks towards the end of the project (once the work reaches here)

This work is part of a programme to upgrade metallic gas mains across the UK.

A technique will be used that will keep gas flowing throughout the work.

A number of service pipes – the smaller pipe which takes gas directly from the main to each property – will also be replaced. This will mean a temporary disruption to each property’s supply as the next connection is made. Advance notice will be given and supplies will be back on the same day they go off.

Customer teams from Balfour Beatty, the contractor carrying out this work for Cadent, have gone door-to-door to discuss the scheme with residents on Bolton Street and can be contacted on 0161 703 1110 if anyone has further questions.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
