Call to shoppers: Lincoln’s Monks Road is still open for business

Lincoln’s Monks Road remains open for business throughout essential gas works
  • Shoppers reminded that they can still drive to shops and businesses
  • Through traffic needs to use diversion route
  • Lincoln’s Monks Road continues to remain open for business throughout essential work to upgrade gas mains in the street.

Local gas network Cadent is reminding shoppers that they can still drive to shops, businesses and commercial premises in Monks Road. Vehicle access is being maintained to homes and businesses although drivers cannot currently cut through Monks Road to get in and out of the city.

Paul Martin, Cadent Authorising Engineer, said: “We are very keen to stress that people can continue to shop and visit businesses as usual during the works. Maintaining vehicle access to homes and businesses is an important aspect of the project.

“The only thing drivers cannot do at the moment is cut through Monks Road to get in and out of the city.

“If you normally use shops and businesses in Monks Road you can continue to do so as usual. However, if Monks Road is your normal route to get in and out of Lincoln, please use the diversion via Lindum Road and Greetwell Road.”

Monks Road is expected to reopen as normal on 21 August.

Cadent is renewing more than half a kilometre of gas pipes in Monks Road and Toronto Street. The work will mean that local people will continue to have a safe and reliable gas supply for cooking, heating and powering their businesses for decades to come.

Engineers are currently replacing pipes between Jellicoe Avenue and Monks Way. This section of the road is closed to traffic. It is expected to reopen on 21 August.

Through traffic is being diverted via Lindum Road and Greetwell Road. Vehicle access arrangements for Monks Road residents and businesses during the closure are detailed below:
    • For residents and businesses in Monks Road, west of Jellicoe Avenue, and in Monks Way, access will be maintained from Broadgate. Access to Monks Way will be maintained via temporary traffic lights.
    • For residents and businesses in Monks Road, east of Jellicoe Avenue, including the Crofton Road Industrial Estate and Allenby Close, access will be maintained from the Outer Circle end of Monks Road.
In addition, there are temporary traffic lights in Monks Road, near to Devon Street, and at the junction of Monks Road and Monks Way. There are expected to be in place until the beginning of September.

Paul Martin added: “This is essential work that will keep gas flowing to local homes and businesses for decades to come. It is part of an ongoing programme to modernise Lincoln’s gas network. We appreciate this is a busy route and the road closure has been timed for the school summer holidays to reduce the impact on the road network.

“We’ll do all we can to finish the project as soon as possible and to minimise disruption to the local residents and drivers. We’d like to thank people for their understanding and patience.”

Work began on 7 July and is expected to take nine weeks.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
