Dementia: free gas safety offer

Cadent rolls out scheme in support of people living with dementia
  • Gas safety valve fitted free of charge, to pipes near a cooker or hob
  • Reduces risk of gas being turned on, or left on, unintentionally
  • Cadent, the company which ensures gas reaches 11m homes and businesses, is extending its offer to fit a free safety device for people living with dementia.

After a successful trial in North West England, Cadent is now making its ‘locking cooker valve’ scheme available to all areas of the country it operates in.

Engineers from the UK’s biggest gas network will fit for free a small valve somewhere near a customer’s cooker or hob. It only takes a couple of hours to do. A set of keys is given to a carer, who can then turn the gas to the appliance on and off as required. This reduces risk of gas being turned on, or left on, unintentionally.

Phil Burrows, who co-ordinates the locking cooker valve scheme at Cadent, said: “We are so delighted to be rolling this out and helping in this way. The locking cooker valve is a small device, but it can make a big difference. It can help with preserving dignity and independence, yet offer peace of mind for family, friends and carers.

“Cadent is determined that the gas we distribute is used in a safe way.

“Our engineers provide a gas emergency service, as well as connecting, maintaining and repairing our 131,000km of gas distribution pipes. This means we have contact every day with customers who may need a little extra assistance. We’re working closely with the Alzheimer’s Society, our chosen charity for the next two years, in part to understand how we can help and support people living with dementia.

“We hope that initiatives like this valve, and our partnerships with such expert charities and organisations, will have a big impact.”

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
