- Essential work to ensure safe and reliable gas supplies in Fulham Road is on target to be complete by September 2017
- When current phase of work completes project will be put on hold until after the annual RideLondon cycling event
- Closure in place on Chelsea Embankment Local businesses and shops will remain open as usual
Cadent has scheduled in a brief pause on its essential gas mains replacement in Fulham Road so other essential work can be carried out in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and to minimise roadworks during the annual RideLondon event.
Work by Cadent’s engineers to replace ageing gas mains in Fulham Road with tough new pipes is progressing to schedule with the current phase of work due to be completed in the week commencing Monday 17 July.
After discussions with Transport for London (TfL), London Buses, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and RideLondon organisers, Cadent has decided to postpone the start of this phase until after the annual cycling event which takes place on Sunday 30 July. This is to ensure that the work does not cause any disruption to the event and will also enable other essential maintenance work to be carried out.
Work will resume on Monday 31 July when there will be a westbound closure of Fulham Road between the junctions with Beaufort Street and Gunter Grove, to enable the work to be carried out safely and efficiently. Temporary traffic lights will also be installed near the junction with Elm Park Gardens. Signed diversions will be in place but road users should allow additional time for their journeys. Prior to that engineers will be carrying out preparatory work for more essential local gas mains replacement on Chelsea Embankment from Friday 21 July to Monday 24 July. To enable the work to be done safely Chelsea Embankment will be closed to westbound traffic from Chelsea Bridge to Beaufort Street from 10pm on Friday 21 July to 12noon on Monday 24 July. There will be a signed diversion route along Chelsea Bridge Road and Sloane Street to the A4 Brompton Road. Vehicles will not be able to turn right to travel west from all roads that join Chelsea Embankment between Chelsea Bridge Road and Beaufort Street.
Cadent Engineering Manager Stuart Donaldson said: “At Cadent we try to be as flexible as possible when delivering our essential work and this includes planning our work around major events such as RideLondon.
“Despite this brief hiatus on the project we’ll still be on course to finish it in September 2017. We’re also and will continue to do all we can to deliver our work with as little disruption to Londoners and visitors to the capital as possible.”
The gas pipes that run beneath Fulham Road have supplied gas to Londoners for more than a century. However as with London’s other infrastructure, work now needs to be done to replace and upgrade the ageing pipes.
Replacing the gas mains will reduce the amount of repair work on Cadent’s network in the area along with the congestion this can sometimes cause. It will also help ensure local homes and businesses keep on enjoying safe and reliable energy as well as supporting London’s economic growth.
The gas mains being replaced are over one metre in diameter and innovative technology is being used to insert the new pipes into these old mains wherever possible. This is reducing the need for digging and also means work can be carried out faster. All work is being coordinated with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Transport for London (TfL) to help ensure traffic disruption is minimised.
People may notice that the work is now being carried out by Cadent, the new name for the company formerly known as National Grid Gas Distribution. What hasn’t changed, is the skilled workforce, working hard to keep gas flowing to homes, businesses and community facilities across the area.
