Details of work to repair gas main at busy Stockport road junction

Specialist teams begin work tonight (13 Jan) to repair a leak found on a gas main underneath a busy Stockport road.

Gas network Cadent is moving in to dig down to the pipe under New Bridge Lane and fix it before it gets worse.

The amount of gas escaping is not at levels that require evacuation and is being monitored regularly.

Work gets under way at 7pm tonight and is expected to last at least the rest of this week. Teams will work all day and into the night. There should be no interruption to gas supplies.

To do this safely, the westbound lane of B6014 Carrington Road (heading towards the town centre) needs to be closed, at its junction with New Bridge Lane and Stockport Road West.

Eastbound traffic (heading away from the town centre) is unaffected.

Engineers from Cadent have liaised with Stockport Council’s highways team and agreed a diversion route, which comes into effect once the work starts tonight (13 January).

Electronic signage is in place now to advise motorists and letters have been posted and/or emails sent to homes, businesses and other buildings in the immediate area.

A spokesman for Cadent said: “We will be working days and nights on this job and hope people understand it’s essential work, both to ensure everyone’s safety and to keep gas flowing safely to heat local homes in the area. We do our best to minimise disruption, but sometimes it’s unavoidable – particularly when our gas main, like here, is right under the road.”
