Engineers are carrying out essential maintenance work to a gas pipeline in Hyde, Central Bedfordshire.

Chiltern Green Road is currently closed near the junction with Lower Harpenden Road, to enable the work to be carried out safely. A signed diversion is in place for road users.

Engineers are digging two open excavations to enable them to inspect and remediate a section of gas pipeline beneath the road. Work is scheduled to continue until Monday 17 February 2020.

The work has been carefully planned to ensure its delivered with as little disruption as possible.  A specialist vacuum excavator – which sucks out ground material – is being used to speed up the excavation process and engineers are also working extended hours to help ensure work is completed as soon as possible.

Local shops and businesses will remain open throughout the project.

Cadent Project Engineer, Kieran Shipp, said: “The work we’re currently doing will help ensure this section of pipe continues to deliver safe and reliable gas supplies to the area.

“It will also reduce the risk of gas leaks from the pipe and associated disruption.”

He added: “We’re doing all we can to deliver this essential work with as little disruption as possible including using specialist kit and working additional hours.”

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
