Hot off the press: Cadent and AWS (Affordable Warmth Solutions) help fight fuel poverty in Potters Bar

helping our community

  • New scheme to help support local residents connect to gas has started
  • Scheme will provide warmer more energy efficient homes
  • Local gas distribution network Cadent and AWS (Affordable Warmth Solutions) working to help reduce energy bills

Work will start this month (January 2020) to connect 35 housing association properties in Potters Bar to affordable energy supplies.

On behalf of Cadent, AWS (Affordable Warmth Solutions) are installing new gas mains and service pipes to 35 homes maintained by housing association, Housing 21, at Temple Court, Mimms Hall Road, Potters Bar.

Once the new gas mains and service pipes are in place, Housing 21 engineers will schedule the replacement of outdated and failing electric heating systems at the homes, replacing them with new energy efficient gas central heating systems, all at no cost to residents.

Work on the project recently got underway and is due for completion in February 2020, meaning residents will soon be able to enjoy their new heating systems.

Phil Burrows, Cadent Customer Service Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be working with AWS and Housing 21 to deliver this scheme, which is part of a programme AWS run on our behalf across the Cadent network.

“With the new connection to our local gas network and energy efficient gas heating systems residents will soon have an economical and efficient way to heat their homes.”

Jeremy Nesbitt, Managing Director of AWS, said: “This scheme is one of many that we’re are delivering on behalf of Cadent and our other partners, delivering affordable warmth and comfort to many thousands of residents.

“Replacing the old outdated electric heating systems with efficient and economic gas ones should really make a positive difference to the lives of the residents at Temple Court.”

Affordable Warmth Solutions (AWS) is a Community Interest Company that works with partners by offering qualifying homes:

AWS was established in 2008 to help address the issues caused by increasing energy prices and the growth of Fuel Poverty in the UK.

Cadent set up its partnership with AWS under its previous trading name of National Grid Gas prior to Cadent being formed in 2017.

Since its inception the partnership has helped lift many thousands of households from fuel poverty.

AWS also established the Warm Homes Fund in partnership with National Grid. This scheme allows Local Authorities and Housing Associations to apply to AWS for funding to help address the challenges of fuel poverty.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
