Q&A with Tom Lane - Repair apprentice

working for us

What made you decide to pursue an apprenticeship?

The main reason I pursued an apprenticeship was the potential to earn a wage whilst learning a skilled trade. I'm an hands-on individual, and this apprenticeship suited that.

When did you start your apprenticeship with Cadent?

I started my apprenticeship on the 17th September 2018.

What does your day-to-day role involve?

My day-to-day role includes attending emergency gas leaks, and assisting teams with relaying domestic and commercial service pipes (the smaller pipes branching off from gas mains which supply individual properties) - whether these are new services for new customers or replacement services for existing customers due to pressure problems or a gas leak. I also liaise with customers and solve any problems or issues they may have.

What have you enjoyed most about your apprenticeship?

The things I have enjoyed most on my apprenticeship would be meeting and working with the different teams in my area. I have also thoroughly enjoyed my training, at our specialist training centre. The facilities, trainers and assessors are fantastic and I could not ask for  better training. Lastly, the challenges I encounter on a daily basis, working across my network area and meeting new people, ensure no two days are the same.

What advice would you give to someone considering pursuing an apprenticeship?

My advice would definitely be to complete an apprenticeship - it was the best decision I have made. Being paid to learn lifelong skills and securing a skilled trade was a win-win situation for me.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
