■    £200,000 gas upgrade in A52 Barrowby Road, Grantham

■    Temporary traffic lights to be in place for 13 weeks

■    New pipe will keep gas flowing for decades to come

A £200,000 project that will keep homes in Grantham warm and safe into the next century is due to start on Monday (17 February).

Local gas distributor Cadent will be renewing more than 770 metres of ageing gas mains under A52 Barrowby Road, from outside Newton House Care Home to Greenhill Road.

The work is expected to take 13 weeks and will see ageing iron gas mains replaced with tough new plastic pipes. The existing pipe has undergone a number of repairs in recent years, resulting in disruption for drivers. This work will prevent similar problems in the future.

To keep staff and motorists safe, there will be temporary traffic lights in Barrowby Road throughout the work.

The junction of Barrowby Road and Winchester Road will be closed for the first three weeks of the project. Residents will be able to access their homes from the other end of Winchester Road.

Darren Elsom, Director of Cadent’s East Network, said: “We are investing up to £200,000 in the future of Grantham’s gas network, so local people can continue to warm their homes for decades to come.

“Gas is important to Grantham, with more than 84% of homes relying on gas central heating. This pipe has served the town for decades but now it is showing its age and needs to be replaced.

“We appreciate this is a well-used road but it is important this essential work is carried out safely. We will do our best to complete it as soon as possible and minimise inconvenience to residents and motorists.”

The project is part of £115 million investment Cadent is making this year in the gas mains in the East Midlands and East Anglia.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
