- Cadent announces major gas mains replacement scheme to replace ageing gas pipes between Poultry / Cheapside and Holborn Viaduct in the City of London
- Work will be carried out in three phases between January and October 2020
- Project will help ensure local properties stay connected to safe and reliable gas supplies until 22nd century
The new year will bring new gas mains for a historic area in the City of London as Cadent
lays the foundations for future gas supplies.
A major project to replace ageing gas mains in Cheapside and Newgate Street will be getting underway in early 2020, with Cadent laying approximate 900m of durable new gas pipes which should last until the 22
nd century, with the mains not needing to be replaced again for at least 80 years.
The existing mains are nearing the end of their operational life and need to be replaced now to help ensure people in the area keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating. Replacing the gas mains will also cut future disruption caused by leaks from ageing pipes.
Work is scheduled to be delivered in phases between January and October 2020, as follows:
Phase 1A: Poultry to Honey Lane: Approximately Monday 6 January to Monday 17
February 2020
The work will take approximately six weeks with engineers working on Cheapside. A road
closure will be in place between the junctions with Queen Victoria Street and Honey Lane.
A number of parking bays will also be suspended.
Phase 1B: Honey Lane to New Change: Approximately Monday 17 February to
Monday 30 March 2020
This phase will take approximately six weeks to deliver. Work will continue along
Cheapside with a road closure in place between Honey Lane and Bread Street, and
some parking bays and bus stops suspended
Phase 2: Gutter Lane to Queen’s Head Passage: Approximately Monday 30 March
to Monday 20 July 2020
This will take approximately 16 weeks to deliver. Work will continue along Cheapside with a road closure in place and some parking bays and bus stops suspended.
Phase 3: St Martin’s Court to Holborn Viaduct: Approximately Monday 20 July to
Sunday 11 October 2020
This will take approximately 12 weeks to deliver. Work will continue along Newgate Street to Holborn Viaduct. Some bus stop and parking bays will also be suspended.
Cadent has carefully planned the work and worked closely with the local authorities to ensure the project is delivered with minimal disruption.
Local shops and businesses will remain open as usual throughout the work with access maintained for local properties. A 1.5m cycleway will also be maintained along the route for the duration of the project.
The new pipes will be inserted into the old gas mains which dramatically reduces the size of excavations needed and duration of the work.
Project Manager Steve Edwards said: “We’ve carefully planned our work in close discussion with the local authorities and information has also been sent to local homes and businesses.
“We’re doing all we can to ensure this essential work is delivered with as little disruption to the local area as possible.”
