Engineers will be braving the winter weather to help ensure people in Ipswich keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies.

Cadent, Britain’s largest gas distribution company has drawn up plans to replace ageing gas mains in Norwich Road Ipswich. Highly durable tough new pipes will replace the old mains

Work is due to start on Monday 8 January and currently it’s expected that it will take approximately four weeks to complete.

The following traffic management will be required to ensure work is delivered safely:

The northbound lane of Norwich Road will be closed for the duration of the project due to the gas main running alongside it. However traffic flows will be maintained by having northbound traffic using the southbound lane and southbound traffic using the temporarily suspended bus lane.

There will also be road closures at the following junctions with Norwich Road:

  • Kelvin Road
  • Lister Road
  • Cromer Road

Cadent Authorising Engineer Vince Doggett said:  “To prepare for the work we held discussions with the local authority and also carried out a ground survey so we could develop a design and schedule that would enable the project to be delivered in in the least disruptive way possible.
“The new gas pipes we’re installing will last for many decades and ensure local people continue to enjoy access to safe and reliable energy supplies for cooking and heating.”

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
