Glossop: essential work to replace an underground gas pipe

in your area

  • Cadent will replace a 45-metre section of pipe which has a small leak on it
  • Engineering team is budgeting three days to complete the work
  • Traffic lights in place for safety reasons, as this pipe (and work) is in a very busy road

Essential repair work is due to start tomorrow (Tuesday 7 August), to completely replace a corroded 45-metre section of pipe where gas is leaking under a busy road in Glossop.

Gas network Cadent says the leak is small and not an immediate risk to safety, but needs to be sorted quickly before it gets any worse.

The pipe, which feeds local homes with gas for cooking and heating, runs directly under Dinting Vale (SK13).

After assessing a number of options, Cadent has decided to replace the whole section of the pipe, rather than carry out a one-off repair.

This will remove the likelihood of further leaks – and further disruption.

For everyone’s safety, traffic lights will manage the flow of traffic around the work area. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys, or use alternate routes.

The existing lights at the junction of Glossop Road and Dinting Vale will be disabled, with traffic instead controlled by the temporary lights.

Two bus stops on Dinting Vale will also be moved 100m further up the road, while this work takes place.

Cadent is aiming to complete the work within three days, and has opted to carry out the work now while local schools are on summer holidays. This should help to keep inevitable disruption to a minimum.

A spokesman for Cadent said: “While small leaks like this don’t present an immediate risk, they clearly still need to be fixed as quickly as possible, before things escalate. This is essential work, to keep everyone safe.

“We’ve decided the best option here is to replace the whole section of pipe – around 45 metres. This will not only cure the leak, it will ensure a long-term, safe and reliable supply of gas to local homes.

“We are very mindful that this is a busy road, so will do everything we can to get the work done quickly – but safely. Please allow extra time for your journeys and thank you in advance for your understanding.”
