Black Country staff from gas distributor Cadent came up with a ‘cracking’ idea to put a smile on the faces of young patients at Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital this Easter.

Concerned about the impact of the Coronavirus outbreak on children and staff at the hospital, Cadent’s Black Country team ‘shelled out’ £500 on a fund to buy Easter eggs for youngsters in the children’s ward.

Fifty Easter eggs were given to the young patients. And because staff raised so much money, the extra cash has been donated to the hospital to buy toys for the children’s ward.

Craig Hansbury, Cadent’s Customer Operations Area Manager for the Black Country, said: “We always like to go the ‘eggstra’ mile for our local communities but especially now during this difficult time for the country.

“With restrictions on hospital visits owing to Coronavirus, and with NHS staff under extra pressure, we thought a delivery of chocolate treats from the Easter Bunny would be just the thing to lift the spirits of youngsters in hospital. And because our staff were so generous the additional money will be used by the hospital to buy toys for the children’s ward.”

The haul of eggs was delivered by Cadent frontline engineer Ian Redding and his wife, Michelle, who is a nurse at New Cross.

Cadent’s Black Country emergency and repair engineers are continuing their vital work to keep gas supplies flowing and deal with gas emergencies.

Craig added: “We know that people rely on us to keep them warm and safe and, as key workers, our staff are on the frontline doing just that. We will continue to deal with gas escapes and deadly carbon monoxide.

“However, we are taking additional precautions to keep our customers and our staff safe, especially if we have to go into people’s homes. You can find out more on our website at https://cadentgas.com/coronavirus.”

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
