- Major upgrade of one kilometre of pipe under King Street will future-proof gas supplies
- 26-week project will see teams work in only one 50 metre work area at any one time, gradually moving north from King Street's junction with Tobin Street towards the junction Manor Road
- Letters sent to all properties directly affected and customer team available on 0161 703 1110
Work is under way to upgrade and improve gas pipes in Egremont, Wallasey.
Gas network Cadent says the ageing metal pipe directly under King Street must be replaced to reduce the risk of leaks and deliver a safe, reliable supply.
With excavations and heavy machinery in a busy area, the work has been planned closely with local authority highways officers to ensure a safe work area.
Traffic lights will manage the flow of vehicles around the work site and motorists are therefore advised to budget extra time to complete their journeys.
In total, one kilometre of gas pipe will be excavated and replaced.
The work starts this week at the junction of Tobin Street and, in 50 metre stretches, will gradually move north over 26 weeks towards the end point close to Manor Road.
Parking will be suspended in these 50 metre work areas, but pedestrian access to properties will be maintained and all businesses will remain open as usual.
“Jobs like these are complex engineering projects,” said Steve Murray, who heads Cadent’s gas mains replacement work in the North West and West Midlands. “We work hard to minimise disruption, but our priority will always be to ensure the safety of the public and our workers.
“We’re replacing a metal mains pipe that’s reached the natural end of its working life with a durable plastic pipe that will last for at least 80 years. It is essential work to ensure customers can be safe and warm in their homes for many years to come.”
Letters have been sent to every property directed affected and customer teams will go door-to-door to discuss the work with residents and business owners. The customer team can also be contacted on 0161 703 1110.
Gas supplies to properties along King Street will need to be switched off (and back on again the same day) – by engineers carrying out the work – as they are connected to the new main. Information will be sent to properties in advance, nearer the time, to explain how this will happen.
Cadent is the UK’s biggest gas network, ensuring gas reaches 11 million homes through a network of 131,000km of pipes. The King Street job is part of a country-wide programme to upgrade and improve metal mains pipes. Last year Cadent spent £77.5m upgrading 500km of gas pipes in the North West region alone.
