Ageing gas mains in Wolverhampton’s Compton Road West are to be renewed next month so that residents can enjoy safe gas supplies for the rest of the century.
Work to replace a stretch of ageing mains in Compton Road West, between Alpine Way and Compton Hill Drive, will take place during February half-term, from Saturday 16 February to Sunday 24 February.
Compton Road West will be closed to through traffic during the half-term week. A diversion route will be in place via Compton Road West, Compton Road, Chapel Ash, Chapel Ash Island, Chapel Ash, Tettenhall Road, Henwood Road, Bridgnorth Road and vice versa.
Vehicle access into the road closure area will be maintained at all times for residents and businesses.
The work is part of an ongoing programme to update Wolverhampton’s gas mains – some dating back to the 19
th century. Two thirds of the city’s 370-plus miles of metal gas mains have now been replaced with tough, hardwearing plastic pipes that will last for at least 80 years.
Craig Horrocks, who heads up Cadent’s gas mains replacement programme in the West Midlands, said: “Cadent is investing in the future of energy in Wolverhampton to keep residents safe and warm for decades to come. It’s part of a £65 million investment in new gas pipes across the West Midlands this year.
“To keep people safe we need to close Compton Road West for one week to through traffic, while residents and businesses will still have access to their properties. This has been earmarked for February half-term week to minimise disruption for motorists and residents.
“We would like to thank people for bearing with us.Once the new pipes are in the ground we won’t need to come back to renew them until the end of the century at the earliest.”
It may be necessary to temporarily disconnect people’s gas supplies for short periods while their gas service pipes (the pipes that take gas from the main in the road to their homes or businesses) are replaced. People will be informed beforehand.
