Cadent welcome fall in UK CO2 levels – our innovation work will help ensure emissions keep falling

corporate

Cadent welcomed this week’s analysis from Carbon Brief which showed the UK’s CO2 emissions fell for the sixth consecutive year in 2018, the longest series of continuous reductions on record.

Outside years with general strikes, this would be the lowest levels of CO2 since 1888, when the first-ever Football League match was played and Tower Bridge was being built in London.

However, the 1.5% reduction in the UK’s CO2 emissions in 2018 is the smallest decline over the past six years. This highlights the fact that continued cuts cannot be taken for granted.

It is clear that if the UK is to reach its carbon targets and to ensure that CO2 levels continue to fall, further measures are needed. Cadent are committed to helping the UK to decarbonise, and as part of this we are looking at innovative ways to decarbonise the gas grid.

The national gas network is a hugely valuable asset that is already supporting the delivery of low carbon gases for heat, power and transport. Cadent is making its network fit for the future - helping low-carbon gas producers connect to the grid and trialling new ways to help decarbonise.
Our innovative projects to help bio-methane and bio-SNG producers connect to the gas grid are already having an impact on reducing carbon emissions. In the longer term, combined with carbon capture storage, these technologies could help to make heating carbon neutral.

Hydrogen blending offers the opportunity to reduce carbon emissions from the gas grid, without requiring any changes to gas appliances. Cadent are currently running trials to assess the feasibility of this across the grid. In the future, using the gas distribution network for hydrogen, offers a longer term ambition that would, combined with carbon capture storage, help to make heating carbon neutral or even negative. Our HyDeploy and HyNet projects are already laying the foundations for the delivery of the UK’s hydrogen economy

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
