  • National Grid renewing 600 metres of gas mains in New Basford area
  • Work will keep gas flowing to local homes and businesses for decades

National Grid is advising local people that there will be temporary traffic lights in Nottingham’s Radford Road from Monday (27 February) as essential work to renew gas mains moves into its next phase.

National Grid is upgrading more than half a kilometre of gas mains in the Radford Road and North Gate area. The existing iron mains are being replaced with tough new plastic pipes that will last for at least 80 years.

Work started on 13 February and is expected to take six weeks. The work will keep gas flowing to homes and businesses until the end of the century.

To enable engineers to carry out the work safely, temporary traffic lights will be installed at the junction of Radford Road and North Gate from early Monday morning. They are expected to be in place for up to four weeks. To reduce disruption they will be manned from 7am to 7pm every day. There will also be no right turn into Radford Road from North Gate while the work is underway. This temporary traffic management will be kept under review by National Grid and the Highways Authority.

The following temporary traffic management measures will remain in place:

  • Temporary traffic lights in North Gate, near the junction of  Rawson Street. The junction of Rawson Street and North Gate will remain closed.
  • The gas mains are also being renewed in Eland Road and the existing road closure will remain in place.
  • The contraflow in Radford Road, at the junction of Eland Street, will remain in place

Local businesses will remain open as usual.

National Grid Authorising Engineer Paul Patrick said: “This essential work will secure safe and reliable gas supplies for local homes and businesses for decades to come. It is part of a nationwide programme to futureproof the nation’s gas network.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused but it is important that we replace these gas mains.  Once the new plastic pipe is in the ground it will last for decades and require little or no maintenance. Every effort will be made to complete the work as quickly as possible and to minimise the disruption.”

The work is part of an ongoing programme to renew gas mains in New Basford. The programme is due to be finished in June. Details of further works will be available over the coming months.
