Essential work to replace ageing metal gas mains has got under way in Sunbury-on-Thames.

Work started last week on a 14-week project to renew the gas mains in Vicarage Road. The old mains are being replaced with tough new plastic pipes that will last for at least 80 years.

The gas mains are being replaced between Bryony Way and the M3 roundabout. Temporary traffic lights are being used during the project to keep staff and road-users safe.

National Grid Engineering Manager Stuart Donaldson said: “This vital work will help ensure that local people keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.

“We’ll do all we can to deliver it with as little disruption as possible.”

Work will involve replacing service pipes to some properties and engineers will require access to do this work which will involve temporarily switching off the gas supply to the properties involved. Those affected will be notified beforehand.

All National Grid engineers carry official identity cards, which people should ask to see before allowing them on their property.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
