- Essential work scheduled to take place between May and September 2017 on Fulham Road
- Public invited to exhibition on Thursday 16 February to find out more
- Traffic management will be required but local businesses and shops will remain open as usual
National Grid is inviting the local community to a drop-in public exhibition to find out more about the second phase of its essential gas mains replacement work being carried out in Chelsea.
Between May and September 2017 engineers will be replacing ageing metal gas mains with tough new pipes. This work will help ensure local people continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.
To ensure engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, traffic management will be needed.
The westbound lane of Fulham Road will be closed between Beaufort Street and Gunter Grove during certain periods of the work. Temporary traffic signals will also be in place to minimise the time and extent of the lane closure.
National Grid will be holding a drop-in public exhibition to give the local community the chance to meet the project team, see detailed plans and ask questions.
The exhibition will take place at:
- Small Hall, Chelsea Old Town Hall, Kings Road SW3 5EE on Thursday 16 February 2017 between 2pm and 8pm
National Grid Project Manager Stuart Donaldson said: “The pipes under the Fulham Road have been providing gas to Londoners for more than a century. Like other London infrastructure, they need work to replace and upgrade them.
“Our replacement programme will reduce the amount of repair work on our network along with the congestion this can sometimes cause. It will also help ensure we continue to provide homes and businesses with safe and reliable energy and support London’s economic growth.
He added: “I’d like to thank everyone in Chelsea and Fulham for their patience during the first phase of our work.
“I’m inviting local people to come and join us for the public exhibition about the second phase of our programme, where they can find out more about the work and meet our team.”
The gas mains National Grid is replacing are over one metre in diameter and innovative technology will be used to insert the new pipes into these old mains wherever possible. This will reduce the need for digging and enable the work to be carried out faster.
All work is being coordinated with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Transport for London (TfL) to help ensure traffic disruption is minimised.
