  • City of London Considerate Contractor Scheme presents Gold Awards to Cadent for its essential gas mains work
  • Awards recognises that good practice code requirements have regularly been exceeded
  • Awards presented at the City of London’s 29th Considerate Contractor Scheme Gold Awards Ceremony

Efforts to deliver essential gas mains work to the City of London as considerately as possible have been recognised with Gold Awards by the City of London.

Cadent provides a 24-7 service across its network in London responding to reports of gas escapes and fixing any issues with its gas mains network. Additionally Cadent engineers are replacing ageing gas mains with tough new pipes in the City as part of their essential medium pressure gas mains replacement work across its North London network.

Both areas of the Cadent business were honoured with Gold Awards and Cadent’s Network Manager for East London Tony Smith, received a special recognition award.

The awards were presented at the City of London’s 29th Considerate Contractor Scheme Awards recently held at the Plaisterers Hall, London Wall.

To qualify for an award contractors have to demonstrate that they have consistently exceeded the Considerate Contractor Scheme Code of Good Practice’s principles of care, cleanliness, consideration, co-operation, communication and climate.

Carolyn Dwyer, Director Department of the Built Environment, City of London, said: “The Gold Award recognises that the requirements of the Code of Good Practice have been consistently exceeded.
“It reflects a spirit of pride, an awareness of the needs of the passing public and regard for the surrounding environment.”

Tony Smith, who has worked in London Gas Distribution for 39 years said:  “Our teams work 24-7 all year round and in all weathers to help keep Londoners connected to safe and reliable gas supplies and we try and do that work in a way that causes as little disruption as possible.

“I was honoured to receive the special award and also delighted to see the wider Cadent team in London have their efforts recognised with the Gold Awards.”

Stuart Donaldson, Cadent Engineering Manager, said: “We’re delighted to have won this Gold Award.

“It’s a testament to the hard work of all our staff and contractors involved in delivering this essential work to the city.”

Gas mains repairs by their nature usually do not allow for much pre planning but every effort is made to ensure the work is delivered with as little disruption as possible.

Cadent’s planned essential gas mains replacement work should help reduce the future number of emergency callouts. Much planning including discussions with local authorities and stakeholders takes place before these projects get underway to ensure any disruption associated with the work is minimised.

Work is carefully scheduled to ensure it is delivered at the best possible time. Technology is also used to reduce inconvenience to the public with engineers using special cameras to conduct underground surveys and then inserting the new mains into the old pipes wherever possible, which reduces the need for large excavations.

Human interaction is also very important with homes and businesses in the area receiving letters and visits informing them of work before it starts. A helpline and online project page are also operated to help ensure people are kept informed of the latest developments.

Mr Donaldson added: “Ensuring that the City of London has a safe and reliable gas supply is very important and our work helps the City maintain its status as leading world hub for finance and business.

“We make a lot of effort to deliver this essential work with as little disruption as possible and it’s nice to see these efforts appreciated with awards like this.”

Cadent is the new name for the company formerly known as National Grid Gas Distribution.
Over the next 12 months the public will increasingly see new Cadent branded vehicles and uniforms as the new brand is phased in and the old National Grid Gas Distribution brand phased out.  What hasn’t changed, is the skilled workforce, working hard to keep gas flowing to homes, businesses and community facilities across the area.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
