- National Grid has worked closely with Transport for London (TfL) to create a temporary cycleway while keeping other traffic lanes open
- Work will help keep Londoners connected to on safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating
Engineers are poised to start essential repairs to fix a gas main on London’s Cycle Superhighway.
Work is taking place in the westbound section of the Cycle Superhighway on Victoria Embankment,
National Grid has worked closely with Transport for London (TfL) to create an innovative traffic management plan which both creates an alternative cycle lane and keeps the two westbound lanes open to traffic. This has been done by temporarily reducing the size of the existing westbound carriageways. The eastbound carriageway will remain one lane as usual.
Engineers are currently preparing the site and setting up the temporary cycleway ahead of working starting. Currently it’s anticipated that the temporary lane will be in operation and the repairs starting either this Sunday (December 11) or early Monday (December 12).
Teams will be working 24 hours a day, seven days a week to complete the work as soon as possible. It’s currently estimated that work will be completed by the end of the month (December 2016) though this is subject to change.
It’s essential the work is done to help ensure safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating are maintained to the area.
Work has been carefully planned in close discussion with TFL and everything is being done to ensure it is delivered with as little disruption as possible.
Tony Smith, National Grid Network Manager East London Repair, said: “We’ve worked closely with Transport for London to plan the work to make sure it’s delivered with as little disruption as possible.
“These essential repairs will help keep Londoners connected to safe and reliable gas supplies and we’ll do all we can to get the job done as soon as possible.”
