Scouting isn’t just about exciting outdoor activities – as Earl Shilton Cubs have been finding out. The youngsters are set to earn badges in information technology and science related topics, thanks to a helping hand from National Grid.
Trish Morris, Senior Risk Analyst, of the Hinckley-based energy network firm handed over nine refurbished lap-tops to Cub Scout Leader Karen Busko on behalf of the Group. The presentation is part of a recycling process the company runs to donate refurbished lap-tops to schools, Scout Groups and charities.
Karen said: "This is a wonderful gift from National Grid that will help our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts achieve so much. Nine lap-tops is a very generous donation and it will make a big difference to those looking to gain their ICT badges.
‘Computer technology is just one of over 200 fun activities we offer, ranging from archery to swimming, science and engineering. We are aiming to complete 100 activities and adventures during this year in preparation for our centenary celebrations in 2016. We always welcome new members.”
Trish Morris added: “Information technology plays a huge part in all our lives. We’re really delighted to help these youngsters gain essential skills in computing.
‘This is part of a National Grid process which ensures that all our lap-tops and computers are recycled and re-used. It ensures that nothing goes into landfill and enables refurbished machines to be used to improve the skills and educational prospects of young people, both in this country and around the world.”
Assistant Cub Scout Leader Steven Lane, who works at National Grid’s Hinckley offices, organised the donation. He’s already got plans for the Cubs’ newly-honed IT skills.
“We’ve already been planning a series of classes aimed at working towards the Information and Communication Technology badge. Now with the new laptops I’m confident that we can help the Cubs – and the Scouts – to learn to code on computers and to create a brand new website for the group at a code camp later in the year.”
Earl Shilton Cub Scouts is open to boys and girls aged eight to 10-and-a-half years old. They meet every Monday evening at the Scout Hut in Alexander Avenue, Earl Shilton or Earl Shilton Methodist Church. New members are welcome. Contact the group at theearlshiltonscouts@hotmail.co.uk
