- 1.5kms of ageing gas mains being upgraded in Wragby Road, Lincoln
- New pipes will keep gas flowing to local homes and businesses for decades to come
- Temporary traffic lights at the junction of Wragby Road and Ruskin Road for nine days during school summer holidays
Major work has got underway to modernise ageing gas mains in Lincoln’s Wragby Road and secure the gas supply for businesses and residents until the end of the century.
In a 16-week project, which started at the beginning of July, local gas network Cadent is renewing 1500 metres of gas mains in Wragby Road, from Outer Circle Drive to St Giles Avenue. Engineers will be replacing ageing metal gas mains with tough new plastic pipes that will last at least 80 years.
The project is part of an ongoing programme to future-proof the city’s gas network. So far, more than 70% of the ageing iron gas mains in Lincoln and its surrounding villages have been replaced with the brand new plastic pipes.
This year nearly 70kms of old gas mains will be replaced in Lincolnshire with new ones, ensuring local people continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating for decades to come.
To carry out the work safely, temporary traffic lights will replace the permanent traffic lights at the junction of Wragby Road and Ruskin Road from Saturday 28 July to Sunday 5 August.
While the lights are in place Cadent will be working extended hours to complete this phase as quickly as possible. To minimise the impact on traffic, the lights will be manned from 7am to 7pm every day but motorists will be advised to leave extra time for their journeys, especially at rush hour.
Cadent Authorising Engineer Paul Martin said: “This much-needed investment in Lincoln’s gas mains will keep city residents warm and businesses flourishing for decades into the future.
“Wragby Road is a popular route so we’re doing all we can to minimise any inconvenience for motorists and the local community. We have timed our most disruptive work for the school summer holidays – a traditionally quieter time on the roads.
“We’d greatly appreciate people’s patience while we carry out this essential work. Once we’ve installed the new pipes we won’t need to come back and renew them until at least the end of the century.”
Motorists are also reminded that there will be temporary traffic lights at the Burton Road/Yarborough Crescent roundabout, from Monday 13 August to Tuesday 21 August, as part of a second major gas mains upgrade Cadent is carrying out in Yarborough Crescent.
It may be necessary to temporarily disconnect people’s gas supplies for short periods while their gas service pipes (the pipes that take gas from the main in the road to their homes or businesses) are replaced. Anyone who is affected will be contacted beforehand.
