- Preparations underway for phase two of major project to replace ageing gas mains in Thurrock
- Public exhibition about the project will be held on Tuesday 5 February
- New gas mains should last until dawn of the 22nd century
Cadent is inviting the public to find out more about phase two of a major project to replace ageing gas mains with tough new pipes which should last until the dawn of the 22
nd century.
Last year engineers completed phase one of the project replacing gas mains from the east side of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge to Motherwell Way, along with a section on the west side of the bridge. The work forms part of a five-year programme to replace ageing gas mains in Thurrock with highly durable new pipes.
The new pipes will help ensure local people stay connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for heating and cooking for decades and also cut the number of disruptive unplanned repair jobs required on ageing gas mains.
Phase two of the project is scheduled to be carried out between May and October 2019. It involves replacing gas mains in London Road between Motherwell Way and West Thurrock Way. The westbound carriageway of London Road between the two junctions will need to be closed during the project to enable work to be carried out. Separate diversions are planned for both local and through traffic and local shops and businesses will remain open as normal throughout the work.
Local people are invited to come and find out more and meet the project team at a public exhibition, which will be held in Cowdray Hall, 560 London Road, West Thurrock, RM20 3BJ on Tuesday 5 February between 4pm and 7pm.
To help ensure the project is delivered with minimal disruption Cadent is also currently carrying out underground route surveys before work starts. These are currently taking place in West Thurrock Way and will also be done in London Road at the junction with Hilltop Road in February.
Cadent Authorising Engineer Michael Morris said: “We’re working closely with Thurrock Council to make sure this essential work is delivered with as little disruption as possible.”
“The underground surveys our engineers are currently carrying out will help ensure we do the work as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
He added: “I’d encourage people who want to know more about the project to come and meet us at the public exhibition.
“Alternatively they can also contact our Community Relations Team by phone or email.”
The project’s Community Relations Team can be contacted on 0800 389 8261 or info@communityrelations.co.uk for more information. For 24-hour operational enquiries people should call 0800 096 5678.
This work is part of Cadent’s ongoing investment across its network to replace and upgrade old gas mains with safer and more durable modern pipes.
