- Cadent to deliver essential gas mains replacement project in The Great Churchyard and Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds in January 2019
- Cadent is working closely with archaeologists and experts from local church diocese to protect historic areas
- Temporary one week road closure scheduled in Angel Hill
A carefully planned project to replace ageing gas mains at a historic Bury St Edmunds site is due to begin in early 2019.
The essential work involves replacing ageing gas mains with tough new pipes which should last for many decades. This work needs to be done now to help ensure people in the local area keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies into the future.
Work will be taking place close to some of Bury St Edmund’s most famous landmarks including St Edmundsbury Cathedral, The Norman Tower, Abbey Ruins and Abbey Gate.
Cadent planners and engineers have been working closely with both archaeologists and experts from the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich to help ensure nothing of historic significance is damaged during the project.
It’s planned to deliver the work as follows:
Phase One: Work due to start on Thursday 3 January 2019
Work will take place in The Great Churchyard, the area of land between St Mary’s Church and the Abbey Gate. Experts from the local church diocese have been called into oversee the work.
Phase Two: Due to start Monday 14 January 2019
Work will take place in Angel Hill. To enable the work to take place the road will be closed for approximately seven days.
The cathedral, church, gardens and all other visitor attractions, shops and businesses in the vicinity will remain open as normal throughout the work.
Cadent Authorising Engineer Vince Doggett said: “We’ve carefully planned our work in close discussion with the local authorities and we’re mindful of the fact that we’ll be working in an area surrounded by historic locations.
“We’ve sought the guidance of both archaeologists and experts from the local diocese to ensure our work doesn’t damage anything of historic significance.”
He added: “We’re doing all we can to ensure this essential work is delivered with as little disruption to the local area as possible including inserting the new pipes into the old gas mains where possible. This reduces the need for large excavations and minimises disruption.
“Our project will help ensure local people keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas for cooking and heating in the future – another chapter in Bury St Edmunds long and eventful history.”
