- Plans announced to replace ageing gas pipes in Cannon Street, City of London
- Work scheduled to be carried out between April and December and will involve a road closure
- Public can find out more at drop-in session on Thursday 28 February
Cadent has announced plans to replace ageing gas mains in the heart of the City of London.
The essential project – designed to ensure the local area keeps on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies– involves replacing two gas pipes in Cannon Street between the junctions with Queen Victoria Street and King William Street. The new pipes should last for over 80 years, helping to secure the local gas network until the dawn of the 22
nd century.
Work has been scheduled for between April and December 2019. To enable the work to be carried out safely Cannon Street will need to be closed for the duration of the project. A signed diversion will be in place and access for emergency vehicles, residents and businesses, including deliveries, will be maintained. Some preparatory work will be done at the junctions of Walbrook and Queen Street in March however this will not affect traffic on Cannon Street.
Local shops and businesses will remain open as usual throughout the project.
People can find out more about the work and meet the project team at a Public Exhibition which will be at St Stephen Church, 39 Walbrook, London EC4N 8BN on Thursday 28 February between 4pm and 7pm.
Cadent Authorising Engineer Michael Morris said: “This work will help ensure the City of London continues to enjoy a first rate gas network for many decades to come. Safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating will be maintained in the area and the number of disruptive unplanned repair jobs required on ageing gas mains will be cut.”
“We’re planning the work in close discussion with the City of London and we’re doing all we can to ensure the project’s delivered with as little disruption as possible.”
He added: “I’d encourage all those who’d like to know more about the project to come and meet us at the public exhibition.
“People can also contact our Community Relations Team by phone or email.”
The project’s Community Relations Team can be contacted on 0800 389 8261 or info@communityrelations.co.uk for more information. For 24-hour operational enquiries people should call 0800 096 5678.
This work is part of Cadent’s ongoing investment across its network to replace and upgrade old gas mains with safer and more durable modern pipes.
