  • Local people in the Birmingham area to benefit from major engineering project starting on Monday 2 April
  • Partnership working with Birmingham City Council to co-ordinate smooth traffic management measures
  • Temporary traffic lights, road closures and diversion routes are necessary to carry out work safely
Local people in Birmingham will benefit from a major investment by Cadent in the area’s gas network to ensure that they continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating until the end of the century.

In a 21-week major engineering project local gas network company Cadent will start work to replace nearly 430 metres of gas pipe in Floodgate Street.

Engineers will replace the existing ageing iron mains with tough new plastic pipes, the diameter of a car tyre, that will last for at least 80 years once they are in the ground.

Steve Murray, who heads up Cadent’s gas mains replacement project in the West Midlands, said: “Cadent is making a major investment into Birmingham’s gas pipe network to ensure that local people continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies to heat their homes, cook their meals and power their businesses for decades to come.

“We often take the benefits of our daily gas supply for granted. This is an important and essential project which when finished will have the significant long-term benefit of providing a continued gas supply for cooking and heating. We’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we carry out this vital project.”

Although residents are unlikely to be directed affected by the works traffic management restrictions will be necessary to allow essential work to be carried out safely.

Cadent has worked in close partnership with Birmingham Council’s Highways Department to carefully plan the traffic measures to support this project.

The project will be split into seven phases many of which will need traffic restrictions.
  • Phase 1: Tuesday 3 April - Monday 7 May – Road Closure
Floodgate Street will be closed between the B4100 junction to outside 104 Floodgate Street. Moore’s Row will also be closed between Milk Street and Floodgate Street.
  • Phase 2: Monday 7 May – Monday 4 June – Road Closure
Floodgate Street will be closed between the junctions of Moore’s Row and Little Ann Street.
  • Phase 3: Monday 4 June – Monday 18 June – Road Closure
Floodgate Street will be closed at the junction of Little Ann Street. There will be no through route from Little Ann Street to Floodgate Street.
  • Phase 4: Monday 18 June - Monday 2 June – Road Closure
Floodgate Street will be closed between the junction of Little Ann Street and River Street.
  • Phase 5: Monday 2 June - Monday 16 July – Road Closure and two-way Traffic Lights
River Street will be closed at the junction of Floodgate Street. Two-way temporary traffic lights will also be in place either side of the River Street and Floodgate Street junctions during this phase.
  • Phase 6: Monday 16 July – Monday 13 August – Road Closure and four-way Traffic Lights
Floodgate Street will be closed between the junctions of River Street and Fazeley Street. Four-way temporary traffic lights will be placed on Fazeley Street, Great Barr Street, Liverpool Street and Heath Mill Lane.
  • Phase 7: Monday 13 August - Friday 17 August  – Road Closure
Floodgate Street will be closed between the B4100 junction to outside 104 Floodgate Street. Moore’s Row will also be closed between Milk Street and Floodgate Street.

That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
