Mains attraction: gas pipe upgrade for Bedworth

  • New gas mains for Heath Road, Bedworth
  • Temporary traffic lights and a lane closure will be needed to keep people safe
  • Work is part of a £65 million investment in the West Midlands gas network

Vital work to safeguard Bedworth’s gas network and keep homes and business warm for the next 80 years is due to start on Monday (15 January).

Local gas network Cadent will be upgrading 300 metres of gas mains in Heath Road. In a three month project, ageing iron mains will be replaced with tough new plastic pipes that will last for at least 80 years.

On Monday (15 January) work will start outside 60 Heath Road, heading towards Croft Road. It will be carried out in 100 metre sections. To keep people safe there will be rolling two-way temporary traffic lights.

There will be weekend working on Saturday and Sunday (20 and 21 January), while engineers carry out work at the top of Heath Road, between the two slip roads for the A444. No temporary traffic lights or other traffic management will be needed for this.

Engineers will return to work on Heath Road from Monday 22 January, carrying on their way towards Croft Road.

During the final phase of the project, in March, there will be a lane closure at the junction of Heath Road and Smorrall Lane, affecting southbound traffic, while engineers decommission the old gas main. This is expected to take two weeks.

The left hand lane (usually used to go straight ahead) will be closed. Traffic will be directed into the right hand lane which will be used for going straight ahead and turning right. Northbound traffic will not be affected.

The project is part of a £65 million investment to renew 370kms of gas pipes in the West Midlands this year.

Steve Murray, who heads up Cadent’s gas mains replacement programme in the West Midlands, said: “We are investing in new gas pipes so that local people can continue to heat their homes, safely and reliably, until the end of the century.

“To keep everyone safe we will need to use temporary traffic lights and a lane closure while we work in the road. We appreciate this will be disruptive and will do everything we can to minimise the disruption. We would urge people to bear with us.”

It may be necessary to temporarily disconnect people’s gas supplies for short periods while their gas service pipes (the pipes that take gas from the main in the road to their homes or businesses) are replaced. People will be informed beforehand.

Cadent employees and contractors carry identification. Residents should always ask to see it before letting anyone into their homes.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
